Oral fluid testing: Oral fluid collection devices come in many different forms. Some require the donor to rinse the mouth with a solution and then spit into a cup. Other methods rely on the inside of the mouth being wiped with a swab. Generally, samples can be collected easily and in virtually any environment.

One key disadvantage with oral fluid drug testing is its narrow detection window. Depending upon the rate of oral fluid produced by the donor, alongside the selection of drugs being tested for, the detection window can range from a few hours to a maximum of 24 hours. Another issue with oral fluid analysis is that problems can arise when a “B sample analysis” is required as not all laboratories are able to analyse the oral fluid from the large variety of devices used to collect oral fluid samples. Whereas there are well established and universal guidelines to support laboratory based urine testing, this is not the case for oral fluid testing. In fact, there are only limited guidelines for laboratory based oral fluid testing.
